Webflow AI: What It Does and When to Use MCP Instead

Key Takeaways+
- The built-in tools include the AI Assistant, the AI site builder, AI code components and AI features in Optimize and Localization.
- Every Workspace plan includes AI credits: 200 a month on Starter, 300 on Core and Freelancer, 400 on Growth and Agency.
- Credits don't roll over. When they run out, AI features pause until the reset, with no surprise charges.
- AI section design only works on sites made with the AI site builder and a few free templates while it's in beta.
- The Webflow MCP server connects your own AI assistant to Webflow. It suits bulk, multi-step work on sites that already exist.
- Webflow says it doesn't train AI models on customer data, and admins can turn AI off.
Webflow AI is the set of AI tools built into Webflow. They can generate a starter site from a prompt, design new sections, write copy and CMS items, fix SEO and accessibility gaps, and build custom code components. They're included in every plan but run on monthly AI credits. For bigger jobs on an existing site, such as bulk CMS updates or site-wide audits, the Webflow MCP server lets an outside AI like Claude or ChatGPT do the work through Webflow's APIs.
At Dscvred Studio, we're a Certified Webflow Partner and use both on client sites. This guide covers what the built-in AI does, what it costs, where it stops and when MCP is the better tool.
What Is Webflow AI?
It's an umbrella name for AI features spread across the Designer, the CMS and Webflow's add-ons. You don't install it. It's switched on by default, and it uses models from vendors including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
If you're new to the platform itself, our guide to what Webflow is and how it works covers the basics.
Webflow AI Assistant
The Webflow AI Assistant is the chat panel inside the Designer. You can ask it how to do something, ask it to design a section, or have it draft copy and CMS items. It's also where the SEO, AEO and accessibility suggestions live.
Webflow AI site builder
The Webflow AI site builder creates a responsive starter site from basic details about your business, including pages, layout, copy and a style guide. It's a quick way to see a direction. Treat the result as a first draft, not a finished site.
AI code components
AI code components let you describe an interactive element, such as a pricing calculator, and get a reusable React component on the canvas. This fills a gap that used to need a developer and custom code embeds.
What Can Webflow AI Do?
In day-to-day work, the built-in AI is best at small, focused tasks inside one page or one CMS collection:
- Start a new site from a prompt and use it to test a layout direction.
- Design a new section in a site's existing style, if the site is supported.
- Write and rewrite copy for headings, buttons and body text.
- Create CMS items one at a time or in bulk, such as sample blog posts or team members.
- Fill SEO gaps like missing meta descriptions, alt text and schema suggestions.
- Build an interactive component without writing the code yourself.
- Answer how-to questions using Webflow University and the Help Center.
Is Webflow AI Free?
Partly. It's included in every Workspace plan, including the free Starter plan, but it's metered by AI credits. Webflow started enforcing credit limits on June 29, 2026.
A few rules worth knowing, all from Webflow's AI credits help article:
- Credits are shared across every site in the Workspace.
- Unused credits expire each month on self-serve plans. There's no rollover.
- Add-ons give 2,000 more credits a month for $25, or $20 a month if billed annually. You can add up to 15.
- There's no fixed price per action. Webflow doesn't publish a rate card, and complex tasks use more.
- Running out doesn't charge you. Credit-based features just stop until the reset.
- Some features need a paid plan. Copy generation and the SEO, AEO and accessibility tools need a paid Workspace or Site plan.
- Optimize and Localization AI don't use credits. They're priced separately.

What Webflow AI Can't Do (Yet)
Webflow is open about the limits, and they matter more on custom client sites than on templates.
- Section design is limited to supported sites. During the beta, it works only on sites built with the AI site builder and a small number of free templates. Most custom-built sites can't use it yet.
- Generated sections are simple.Webflow's help article says they don't include components, images or CMS data. The AI also can't edit your existing classes.
- It's a first draft. Webflow itself says to review generated designs before using them.
- It works one task at a time. It isn't built for jobs like "update the meta description on all 80 blog posts and report what changed."
- It doesn't know your brand rules unless you tell it, so copy can drift into generic phrasing.
Those last two points are where MCP comes in.
What Is the Webflow MCP Server?
The Webflow MCP server is Webflow's official connection for outside AI tools. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI assistant use another app's tools. With it, an assistant like Claude or ChatGPT can read and change your Webflow site through Webflow's APIs, within the permissions your account already has.
According to Webflow's MCP documentation, an MCP-connected assistant can:
- Build and edit pages, elements, styles, components and variables
- Create and update CMS collections and items
- Manage assets and custom code
- Read site analytics and SEO and AEO data
- Add GSAP interactions, added in MCP 2.1 in September 2026
A few limits apply. It can't create a brand-new site, so you start the site in the dashboard first. Each login covers one Workspace. Some visual actions, like taking snapshots or changing the canvas, need the Designer open with the Webflow Bridge App.
When we connected the server for this post in November 2026, it reported version 2.2.0. Its own guide warns that removing an element can't be undone through the tool, which is why we always work on a staging branch first. We walk through the full setup in our Webflow MCP with Claude guide.
Webflow AI vs MCP: When to Use Each
Use the built-in AI for quick work inside the Designer. Use MCP when the job spans many pages, many CMS items or several steps.
Use the built-in AI when:
- You're starting a new site and want a fast first draft.
- You need one section, one block of copy or one component.
- You want quick SEO suggestions while editing a page.
Use MCP when:
- You need to audit or update dozens of CMS items or pages.
- You're working on a custom site that the AI Assistant can't redesign.
- The task has several steps, like "check every blog post, list missing alt text, then fix it."
- You want the AI to follow your own brand rules or a class system like Client-First.
Many teams use both: the built-in AI for small edits during design, and MCP for maintenance and bulk work after launch.
How to Use AI Safely on a Live Webflow Site
AI makes changes fast, which also means mistakes spread fast. These are the rules we follow on client sites:
- Work on staging first. Review AI changes on the staging domain or a branch before you publish.
- Read every AI-written line. Check facts, claims, prices and tone before anything goes live.
- Check SEO changes in bulk. Duplicate or generic meta descriptions across many pages can hurt more than they help.
- Keep a record. Note what the AI changed, especially after bulk MCP work.
- Limit who can use it. Workspace Admins and Owners can turn AI off if a team or client doesn't want it.
- Watch your credits. Track usage in Workspace settings so a big task doesn't stall halfway.
For finance and healthcare sites
Regulated sites need an approval step before AI-written copy goes live, since claims and required wording matter. On data, Webflow says it doesn't use customer data to train generative AI models, and its AI vendors are contractually barred from doing so. Even so, keep client and patient data out of prompts. See how we approach this for financial services and healthcare teams.
How Dscvred Studio Can Help
We help teams get the speed of AI on Webflow without the cleanup. As a Certified Webflow Partner, we work with fintech, finance, healthcare and B2B SaaS companies on:
- New builds that use AI for early drafts, then get a custom design and a clean class system.
- Bulk updates through MCP, from CMS fields to meta descriptions and alt text across your whole site.
- Safe changes on live sites, with every edit tested on staging and approved before publishing.
- Compliance-aware copy for regulated industries, with a review step before anything goes live.

FAQ
What can Webflow AI do?
It can generate a starter site, design sections, write copy, create CMS items, suggest SEO and accessibility fixes and build custom code components. It also powers testing ideas in Webflow Optimize and machine translation in Localization.
Is Webflow AI free?
It's included in every plan, including the free Starter plan, but it's limited by AI credits. Starter gets 200 credits a month, Core and Freelancer get 300, and Growth and Agency get 400. Copy and SEO tools need a paid plan.
Is the Webflow AI site builder good?
It's good for a fast first draft and for testing a layout direction. It isn't a replacement for a custom design. Expect to edit the structure, copy and styles before launch.
Does Webflow train AI on my data?
No. Webflow says it doesn't use customer data to train generative AI models, and its AI vendors are contractually barred from training on that data.
Can ChatGPT or Claude edit my Webflow site?
Yes, through the official Webflow MCP server. Once connected, they can update pages, styles, components and CMS items within your account's permissions. Some visual actions need the Designer open with the Bridge App.
How many AI credits do I get in Webflow?
Starter gets 200 a month, Core and Freelancer 300, Growth and Agency 400, and Team 100,000 a year. Enterprise is custom. Add-ons give 2,000 more credits a month.
